Redesigned and deployed CPA Status Promotion tool for 2.1k managers

CONTEXT

Ernst & Young Data Intelligence Delivery (DID) UX Internship

As a UX Design Intern on EY’s DID Team, I partnered with engineers and analysts to redesign internal dashboards for hiring teams, transforming complex data into clear, actionable insights.

My work focused on enhancing accessibility, visual hierarchy, and information design to improve usability across the firm.

OVERVIEW

I worked on internal Audit products through the Data Intelligence Team. I primarily worked under the Talent Pillar.

I did a variety of work from working on other redesign dashboard projects, designing a template guide for D.I.D., design workshops for management, user research on unreleased features, and more!

PRODUCT ANALYSIS

CPA Status Promotion Tool

I worked on redesigning a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) Status Dashboard used by hiring teams to track promotion eligibility based on CPA completion. This project allowed me to expand my skills by directly implementing design updates in Power BI and collaborating closely with engineers and data analysts.

The original dashboard had several usability challenges — including limited white space, a dark and inconsistent layout, unclear visual hierarchy, and low contrast — all of which made key insights difficult to interpret quickly.

PRODUCT IMPACT

Successfully implemented and launched the redesigned dashboard.

Key improvements included:

Accessibility: Higher contrast ratios and improved readability
Visual Clarity: Light, spacious layout with increased white space
Consistency: Unified design system with clear fonts and standardized sizing

DID REPORT TEMPLATE ITERATIONS

I re-evaluated this iterations as the shadows and rounded corners were only applicable for when the charts were clickable/drill-through pages. This was often not the case, so I continued to iterate. The reset button is consistent with the design system. (Note: Images blurred for confidentiality)

I proposed a new reset button that was more intuitive to corresponding to reseting the slicers due to its proximity and grouping within the same division.

Key Takeaways

1. UX is for Everyone

After I implemented the design changes, the tool was released shortly following user testing. This tool is used by internal management teams to evaluate which managers are eligible for promotion based on their CPA Status and evaluates 2.1k+ managers in the database.

2. Innovating with empathy means understanding the implementation process.

Through the CPA dashboard redesign, I gained the technical confidence to implement changes myself directly in Power BI. This experience showed me how design decisions translate into tangible improvements within a tool. Additionally, I led a workshop exploring the translations from Figma to Power BI.

3. Put yourself in the shoes of your future user.

Conducting user research on an unreleased internal tool deepened my understanding of how to translate research findings into actionable product improvements. This reinforced the value of grounding design in real user needs.
Creating reusable templates in Figma gave me the opportunity to consider both user needs and stakeholder priorities. Balancing usability with business goals sharpened my ability to design with multiple perspectives in mind.
